WHY THIS EXPLANATION
Why I favor the candleholder hypothesis.
Several features acquire a practical role in one operation. This is a qualitative judgment of explanatory fit; the evidence does not yet identify the ancient use.
- 01 / FIT
Different holes fit different candles.
The owner could choose a hole for the candle’s actual thickness. Neither numbered markings nor a shared measuring scale would be necessary.

The knobs become feet.
Each face has five vertex knobs, giving a new standing position whenever the body is turned. The hollow shell receives the short candle end while using less metal than a solid body.
This makes the geometry useful, but does not explain why twelve positions were necessary.
- 03 / HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Candleholders belong in the period.
The Roman iron holder from Uley has a candle socket and three feet. Ward also described a reversible four-socket holder from Caerwent, where three sockets become the feet.
The Caerwent date and interpretation follow Ward; its deep sockets do not validate a dodecahedron’s thin rim.
- 04 / A MATERIAL CLUE
Wax was reported inside one.
Jacobi described yellow wax in the Feldberg dodecahedron in 1892. That is compatible with a candle or another wax-related use.
The report supplies neither a modern chemical identification nor proof of ancient candle residue.

A more direct chain of assumptions.
A rangefinder needs a known target size and a way to calibrate it. A seal-forming tool needs a matching ancient product; a broad ritual label leaves the actual operation unspecified. A candleholder gives the holes, rim and feet a concrete job.
This is an inference, not an elimination of alternatives. Jewelry and wire-working uses remain serious possibilities.
- 06 / WHAT DOES NOT FIT YET
The objections still matter.
A thin rim may not retain soft wax reliably, an open bottom cannot collect drips, and simpler holders already existed. The reported equal holes of the Goodrich example also weaken the multiple-size explanation.
Without much weight on the wax report or the convenience of different openings, this hypothesis has only a small advantage. A successful replica would establish feasibility, not ancient use.

Five knobs support the downward face in this ideal model. Original objects vary in shape and aperture size.
The rim does the holding.
A wider candle shoulder prevents it falling through. This alone does not prove resistance to leaning or softened wax.
Historically plausible, unconfirmed.
Roman candleholders are documented. That does not establish this object’s function.
